The British Hawkins cruisers became the progenitors of a whole class of ships, taking their place alongside the Dreadnought. They were chosen as a model for determining the upper limit of displacement and caliber of guns of future cruisers at the Washington Conference on Limitation of Naval Armaments in 1921-1922. "Hawkins" were built during World War I to fight the "Kaiser's pirates" - German raiders. Cruisers, intended for action on remote ocean communications, were named after famous admirals of the era of Elizabeth Tudor (so, HMS Hawkins was named after John Hawkins, hero of the battle with the Invincible Armada), so there was a common name for the "Hawkins" - The Elizabethans. In total, the Royal Navy included five "Elizabethans": HMS Hawkins, HMS Frobisher, HMS Effingham, HMS Raleigh and HMS Cavendish. "Cavendish", converted into the aircraft carrier "Vindictive", participated in the intervention in Russia, and its aircraft repeatedly attacked Kronstadt. "Hawkins" actively fought in World War II, from the 1940 Norwegian operation, the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean to the Allied landings in Normandy.
