"The Divine Comedy" by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is the greatest poetic work of European culture. It recreates the human worlds of the Middle Ages and its ideas about the structure of the universe, God and the afterlife of the soul.
Written in the first quarter of the 14th century and first published at the end of the 15th century, the Comedy received the epithet "Divine". It consists of three related parts - "Hell", "Purgatory", "Paradise". Each has 33 songs, and one more is the opening song to "Hell". There are 100 in all. The text of the "Divine Comedy" is printed in translation by Mikhail Leonidovich Lozinsky (1886-1955) with his commentary and introductory article. Dante's plots and symbols are illustrated by Andrei Petrovich Karapetyan. His art cycle consists of more than 140 works for the entire poem.
