Given the significance of the Battle of Khotyn (both for the course of the war as a whole and for understanding Ottoman policy in Ukraine), as well as the need to shed light on the previously largely ignored or misinterpreted perspective from the "other" (Turkish and Russian) side, it is worth examining the circumstances of this event in more detail.
This book focuses specifically on the events of 1673, analyzing both the facts of Jan Sobieski's autumn campaign against the Ottomans and their precursors—the struggle for the Right Bank of the Dnieper, as well as operations in other theaters of war, including the actions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's Russian allies.
The authors utilized numerous primary sources—military service records, diaries, letters, chronicles, and memoirs—compiled not only by Poles and Lithuanians but also by their allies and adversaries. Numerous quotations, sometimes of considerable length, are cited throughout the book, and even more extensive excerpts from these sources are published in the appendices. This may make it somewhat more difficult for readers to understand the text, but the authors make no apologies for this. In our opinion, the voices of witnesses and contemporaries of the events help us better understand and feel the era, and see the events in which they found themselves through the eyes of these people.
