We are transported from the Roman Curia to the chambers of the Russian tsars, to Poland, where the papacy sees the vanguard in the advancement of Catholicism in the East, to Belarus and Ukraine, where there is a struggle for the souls of the local population between the Catholic and Orthodox clergy, to Vienna and Paris, where they are closely watching what is happening, we witness the rapid activity of the Jesuits in Russia. And gradually a picture emerges before us of how for centuries the Roman Curia tried to draw Russia into the orbit of its influence, to use its human and other resources in exchange for the offer of the "true faith", to oppose it if not Turkey, then the Habsburgs, if not the Habsburgs - then the Reformation. Having no sympathy for the Russian autocracy, the author, however, managed to move away from the traditional for Western historiography Eurocentric view and tried to look at what was happening also from the point of view of Russian interests. The translation was made especially for this edition. Eduard Winter (1896-1982) was a German historian, Slavist, and doctor of theology.
