The series of notes "Ten Years Later" by Dietrich Bonhoeffer is a short but incredibly pithy text, representing a kind of "report" on ten years lived under Hitler's dictatorship. It is the quintessence of experience gained over long years of active work and struggle; the result of diligent observation of himself and his fellow citizens. Why were Germans so vulnerable to the insidiousness of evil? What can they rely on if all their previous moral compass—duty, obedience, integrity, and even conscience—have become unreliable? How should they treat those who have succumbed to propaganda and joyfully applaud the lawlessness that is unfolding? How should they live and act if they are constantly forced to choose between bad and worse? What kind of people will be able to lead German society after the collapse of the Hitler regime? And finally, will those who suffered so many spiritual wounds while fighting evil be able to adapt to this new society? Bonhoeffer tries to find answers to these “eternal” questions, which arose in a very specific historical situation, in his notes.
