This anthology recreates a historical panorama of classical Japanese poetry from the Middle Ages and early modern periods in all its genre and stylistic diversity. It includes masterpieces in the tanka, choka, kanshi, imbun, and renga genres by celebrated poets of the 7th–16th centuries, who have become part of the golden fund of Japanese literature: Kakinomoto Hitomaro, Ariwara Narihira, Ono no Komachi, Ki no Tsurayuki, monk Sosei, Jakuren, Fujiwara no Shunzei, Fujiwara no Teika, Saigyo, and Sogi. For the first time, Russian readers are introduced to a massive body of poetry by the Zen masters Dogen, Muso Soseki, and Ikkyu, written in Chinese. The poetic world of the Edo period is represented by the works of Basho, Buson, Issa, and other remarkable haiku poets, alongside the lyrical and philosophical tanka of Roan. Ryokan, Kotomichi. The collections of humorous senryu and kyōka poetry, as well as folk poetry from the "joy quarters," are particularly vibrant. The section on Silver Age poetry, along with traditional lyrical miniatures, includes superb examples of new forms by Shimazaki Tōson, Miyazawa Kenji, and Nakahara Chūya. The book is complemented by detailed introductory articles and commentary.
