Kevin Kwan was born in Singapore to a family at the top of the "Asian aristocracy": his great-grandfather was one of the founders of Singapore's oldest bank, his grandfather was a prominent ophthalmologist and the first Singaporean to be trained abroad. His parents, an engineer and a pianist, moved to the US when Kevin was 11 years old. He earned an MFA in Media Studies from the University of Houston, studied at the Manhattan School of Design, worked for Interview magazine founded by Andy Warhol, then opened his own creative studio serving prestigious clients such as the Museum of Modern Art and the New York Times. His trilogy, which began with the novel Crazy Rich Asians, became an international phenomenon: translated into two dozen languages, multimillion-dollar sales, adapted under the direction of a seasoned producer like Nina Jacobson of Hunger Games fame; on a budget of $30 million, the film Crazy Rich Asians (directed by Jon Chu and starring Constance Wu and Henry Golding) grossed $240 million at the global box office, and sequels are already being filmed. In 2014, Kwan was named to the Hollywood Reporter's "5 Most Promising Writers" list, and in 2018 he was named to Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People list.
