The monograph, based on materials from seventeen archives of five countries, reconstructs in detail for the first time the military and political biography of one of the most controversial figures of the Russian Civil War era, the white general and red military specialist Yakov Aleksandrovich Slaschev-Krymsky (1885-1929). Slaschev was a Guards officer, a graduate of the Imperial Nicholas Military Academy, a hero of World War I, and a talented military commander. During the Civil War he commanded a brigade, division and corps, with which he operated in the North Caucasus, Crimea and Ukraine. He became a general at the age of 33. He became best known as the leader of the defense of the Crimea from the Reds in early 1920. The successful defense of the peninsula allowed the Whites to hold on to European Russia until November 1920, which prolonged the Civil War in the South of the country for several months. The subsequent conflict with General P.N. Wrangel and dismissal by court of honor from the Russian Army caused Slashchev's return from exile to Soviet Russia. The book analyzes Slashchev's service experience and life strategies both during his service in the old army and during the Civil War, when he collaborated with both the Reds and the Whites, reconstructs the most probable motives for his return to Russia, and investigates his activities in Soviet Russia and the USSR. Documentary materials that shed light on various aspects of the biography of the hero of the book are published as appendices. The publication is intended for all those interested in the history of Russia during the revolutionary period.
