The book by a leading aviation historian is a detailed account of one of the best fighters of the Great Patriotic War, the creation, design, modifications and combat use of the Bell P-39 "Aerocobra" on all fronts of World War II, from the Pacific Ocean and North Africa to the Arctic Circle, but above all - on the Soviet-German front. This American fighter, characterized by an unusual design for that time (the engine on the Bell P-39 was located behind the cockpit), became one of the symbols of our victory. Half of all produced "Aerocobras" (almost 4600 airplanes) were delivered to the USSR under lend-lease, which saved the firm "Bell" from financial collapse. Three of the five best aces of the Red Army Air Force - three times Hero of the Soviet Union Alexander Pokryshkin, twice Hero Grigory Rechkalov and Nikolay Gulaev - flew on the overseas machines. Soviet pilots appreciated the "Aerokobra" for its high speed, excellent maneuverability at medium and low altitudes, powerful 37-mm gun, reliable radio, survivability and good protection (pilots on the "Cobra" did not burn, as the plane was made of metal, and the tanks are located far away in the wings) - they said that the P-39 felt "like in a safe". "Aerocobra" became not only the most mass-produced, but also the most beloved of the aircraft supplied under Lend-Lease and in popularity in the troops is comparable to the legendary "Studebaker" and "Dodge three-quarter". The publication is illustrated with unique photographs and exclusive projections of the Aerocobra.
