The new book by Doctor of Historical Sciences A. V. Ganin is dedicated to the biography of Major General Anatoly Leonidovich Nosovich (1878–1968). Adventurer and adventurer, guards cavalryman, athlete, favorite of the emperor, hero of the First World War, colleague of the future President of Finland Baron K. G. Mannerheim, high-ranking military specialist of the Red Army, white underground fighter in the red headquarters, opponent of the future Soviet leader I. V. Stalin, defector, prisoner of the reds and the whites, journalist and memoirist, white general, French taxi driver. All this is about Nosovich. His life resembles an adventure novel, the culmination of which was the defense of Tsaritsyn from the Whites in the summer of 1918. At that time, Nosovich, who served as chief of staff of the North Caucasian Military District of the Reds and simultaneously worked for the White underground, was opposed by the extraordinary commissar of the South of Russia for food and a member of the Military Council of the district, I.V. Stalin. By decision of Stalin, Nosovich was eventually arrested. Was this a manifestation of Stalin's foresight or an accident? How did the White intelligence officer manage to escape and continue his subversive work? Why did the Whites later not believe him? Readers will find answers to these and many other questions on the pages of this book. Based on previously unknown documents from domestic and foreign archives, the study reconstructs, in addition to the life of General Nosovich, the history of the first defense of Tsaritsyn, the confrontation between underground fighters and red commissars in the South of Russia, tells about the dramatic events on the Southern Front in the autumn of 1918 and provides extensive material for reflection on the reasons for the victory of the Reds and the defeat of the Whites in the Civil War. The study is based on materials from seventeen archives in Russia, Latvia, France, Finland and the USA, including documents from special services, as well as family archives of the descendants of officers who participated in the events.
