Anthony Trollope is a British classic whose modern popularity in the English-speaking world can be compared only to that of Jane Austen ("Trollope kills me with his skill," Leo Tolstoy wrote in his diary), and The Barsetshire Chronicles is deservedly considered one of his greatest achievements.

The Last Chronicle of Barset is a novel that Trollope himself considered his best book. This time, the usual everyday conflicts are complemented by a detective plot (Wilkie Collins's friend had to try his hand at this genre!). A poor priest is accused of stealing a cheque for twenty pounds, and Barsetshire society is divided: some are convinced of his innocence, while others are equally convinced he is a thief and demand his dismissal from the parish before his trial. Meanwhile, the fate of not only the priest himself, but also the loving couple, hangs on the jury's decision...

The novel is published with a full set of classic illustrations by George Housman Thomas, which accompanied the first edition of "The Last Chronicle of Barset" as a supplement to Cornhill Magazine.
