Azef. Antihero of the Russian Revolution

In the early 20th century, when the Russian Empire was rocked by terrorist attacks and revolutions, the inconspicuous electrical engineer Yevgeny (Yevno) Azef led two secret and dangerous lives. He simultaneously worked as a secret agent for the police, fighting revolutionaries, and headed the Combat Organization of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, which staged assassination attempts on high-ranking officials and members of the royal family. He sometimes led the police on false trails, sometimes betrayed his comrades in the underground.

After his exposure, Azef went from being a revolutionary legend to a pariah, and his name became a symbol of shameful unscrupulousness. However, the writer Valery Shubinsky managed to reveal the double agent as, first and foremost, a human being—with his own loyalties, known moral limitations, and even political convictions. In turbulent times, when society's moral compass is completely knocked off course, learning the true story of a sinister cynic can be not only disconcerting, but also sobering.
