Archbishop Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky) (1877-1961) stands apart in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. He combined seemingly incompatible things: he was an outstanding surgeon who saved people in three wars - the Russo-Japanese, the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War, who left a scientific legacy, the value of which is recognized to this day - and he was an outstanding churchman who fearlessly defended Russian Orthodoxy and steadfastly endured the hardships of eleven years of wandering in prison and exile.
And now, six decades after his death, the memory of him lives on in both scientific and ecclesiastical circles. Museums and permanent exhibitions have been opened, monuments and memorial plaques have been erected, prizes and scholarships have been established, movies have been made and books dedicated to the doctor V. F. Voyno-Yasenets have been published. F. Voyno-Yasenetsky. And at the same time, St. Luke was enrolled first in the list of locally revered saints, and then, in 2000, - and to the list of saints for universal church veneration. Temples were erected in his name, icons and prayers were written, and divine services were held. This book is the work of a secular historian-religious scholar who approaches the description and comprehension of the fate of the surgeon-bishop primarily from a scientific perspective, relying on a variety of archival sources and documentary materials, involving newly discovered circumstances of Archbishop Luke's life, as well as revealing the content and zigzags of the religious policy of the Soviet state in the 1920-1960s.
