The publication of the book by the brilliant Russian philosopher Alexei Fyodorovich Losev (1893-1988) "The Ancient Cosmos and Modern Science" is timed to coincide with the 130th anniversary of his birth and the 35th anniversary of his death. In this work, the eminent scholar sets out to show "how the ancient cosmos is grounded dialectically," i.e., what dialectical categories the Greek thinkers used to "realize the construction of the universe they contemplated." The main concepts underlying A.F. Losev's entire study are name, number and thing. The name in the ancient tradition, according to Losev, is the "countenance", the expressive form of the thing itself. Number is the constructive basis of any thing. The thing itself is an independently existing essence that is the subject of human cognition thanks to number and name, which are objective ways of the successive process of comprehension of objects. Along with this, Losev traces the direct connection between the concepts inherent in antiquity and the achievements of science that existed at the time of his work.
The book is addressed to historians of national thought, philosophers, culturologists, as well as to a circle of erudite readers seeking to comprehend a holistic picture of the world.
