A new priest, John Meredith, arrives in Glen St. Mary. He is a widower with four children—Gerald (Jerry), Faith, Una, and Thomas Carlyle (Carl). The unruly children constantly get into trouble, which calls into question their father's ability to raise them and fulfill his post. The only people they are friendly and open to are the Blythe family.
The children of Anya and Gilbert, the Merediths, and the orphan Mary Vance have chosen a favorite play area—a hollow behind a grove of trees, which they call Rainbow Valley. Jim Blythe decides to organize a "Good Behavior Club" to teach the Merediths good behavior. For misbehavior, the children devise their own punishments. As a result of one such punishment, Carl contracts pneumonia after spending several hours in the rain in the cemetery, and Una faints during a church service after a day of fasting. John Meredith blames himself for being a lousy father and decides to marry to give his children a mother. He proposes to Rosemary West, a single woman in her thirties, but is rebuffed by her older sister, Ellen, who promised to stay together after their parents' deaths. Soon, Ellen herself joins forces with her longtime lover, and things begin to improve for John and Rosemary.
