Ursula Weidenfeld (born 1962) studied economic history, German studies and political economy in Bonn and Munich. She worked as a correspondent for the weekly business news magazine Wirtschaftswoche and also headed the economics section and served as editor-in-chief of the Berlin newspaper Tagesspiegel. In 2007, she was awarded the Ludwig Erhard Prize for her contribution to economic journalism. In 2017, her book Government Without People was published. Ursula Weidenfeld is currently an economic journalist as well as a moderator and commentator on television and radio programs. No one has ever voluntarily left the highest office in German politics - except Angela Merkel. At the end of her last term in office, she once again managed to show herself to be an excellent crisis politician and received high marks in opinion polls. Germans themselves believe that Angela Merkel is as pragmatic as Helmut Schmidt would like her to be. She has little interest in ideologies, beliefs, principles. She has cold-bloodedly done away with several Christian Democrat shrines at once, such as military obligation and atomic energy. Critics accused her that Merkel's only program was to remain chancellor. And yet, with no clear ideology and no illusions, she ushered in an entire era in German political history. The period from 2005 to 2021 is unequivocally worthy of being called the "Merkel era". Now that this era has come to an end, it is time to take a closer look at the chancellor: what does she leave as a legacy? Did she "only" manage indifferently or was she able to set trends that are destined to develop for years to come? Yes, they did, Ursula Weidenfeld believes, and they will shape the life of the state in the years to come. This book is not just a summation. It aims to give a fair assessment of the Merkel phenomenon and to paint a portrait of the woman who changed Germany.
