Ambroise Vollard was certainly the most important dealer in modern painting since the late Durand-Ruel. He was one of the first to understand and courageously support Cézanne. All the great independent artists passed through his gallery: Van Gogh, the Impressionists, Redon, Gauguin, Matisse, Laprade, Rousseau, Roussel, Vlaminck, Derain, Puy, Chagall, Picasso, Dufy.
The triumph of the outstanding art dealer, collector and publisher was the exhibition "From Cézanne to Picasso. Ambroise Vollard - Patron of the Avant-garde" organized in 2006 at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and then at the Art Institute of Chicago. The following year the exhibition moved to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
The plot of the book consists of three parts - the first is dedicated to the story of Vollard's entry into the Parisian society of artists and collectors, the second tells about the search for and acquaintance with the heirs after the death of the marchand, the final part is the story of the fate of his extensive collection.
The researcher's interest and several incredible coincidences in the life of Natalia Semenova herself allowed her to tell a fascinating and sometimes literally detective story of Ambroise Vollard.
