Theory and application of geographic information systems and technologies.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become increasingly important in helping us understand complex social, economic, and natural dynamics in situations where spatial components play a key role. However, the fundamental algorithms used in GIS are difficult to understand and teach, partly due to the lack of a logically coherent presentation. This book is an attempt to address this problem by combining rigorous formalized language with practical examples and exercises. The author identifies three main areas in GIS: - geometric algorithms; - spatial data indexing; - spatial analysis and modeling. The theoretical material is supported by code in the popular Python programming language. Thanks to the detailed description of many of the algorithms mentioned, this book could become a new textbook for students studying this complex and important area of geography.
