Maxim Ershov has a hobby that many people consider unusual. He visits places on the planet that are not the most obvious for tourists during their less than ideal (and certainly not the most peaceful) times. By the time this book was published, he had visited 80 countries, including Chad, Guinea-Bissau, Yemen, Syria, Guyana, and others, and written ethnographic essays on almost every one.

As for modern Afghanistan, an entire book is dedicated to it, and it's right here. It covers the distant past, from which Zoroaster, Alexander the Great, and Tamerlane cast their shadows into the present, and the present day. The author not only toured Afghan cities and saw the sights (and Afghanistan, with its rich history, has plenty to see), but also interacted with people—from simple traders in the bazaars to Taliban leaders at the head of city administrations. And at the same time, I discovered that Afghanistan is a vibrant place where bearded Islamic patrols on the streets and fashionable women with pumped-up lips in non-alcoholic restaurants somehow combine.
