"In 2003, I was fortunate enough to travel to Greenland as a journalist to cover the adventures of another expedition, and I was literally drawn to these inhospitable places, with their stately isolation from the world, their special people and their history. When I discovered the story of the Greeley Expedition (1881-1884), I was blown away by it. Like all stories of the great past, it had been told, re-told, and interpreted many times before me, but I immediately wanted to present it in my own way. And I made sure that my interpretation focused on the spirit of adventure and triumph, unity and brotherhood, patriotism and courage. Adolph Greeley was a man of ambition, fanatically dedicated and at the same time a very complex and contradictory personality. The power of his intellect made him equally savvy in science and math, languages and culture, history and the arts. A man of encyclopedic knowledge, a man of destiny, without whose wise and sensitive guidance hardly any of the expedition members would have had a chance to survive in the conditions in which they found themselves.
