The Philokalia is a collection of ascetic works by Christian ascetics from the 4th to 15th centuries. This collection was compiled by Nicodemus of the Holy Mountain and Macarius of Corinth and was first published in Greek in 1782. The Philokalia was translated into Slavonic by St. Paisius Velichkovsky. In the 19th century, St. Theophan the Recluse undertook the extensive work of translating, compiling, and expanding the collection into Russian. This book presents only a small portion of the Philokalia, most suitable for secular readers.
