This publication marks a significant milestone – it presents for the first time 500 of the finest, and predominantly previously unpublished, graphic works by the great master of cinema, Sergei Eisenstein. Created in collaboration with the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art, the book traces the extraordinary twists and turns of Eisenstein's life and career through the styles of his graphic works. Despite their diversity, they nonetheless form links in a single creative evolution: from early childhood drawings to costume and set designs, from absurd psychoanalytic sketches to late abstractions.

Leading Eisenstein scholar Naum Kleiman offers a new insight into the motives and objectives of these graphic works and comments on excerpts from the director's own reflections and analyses, some of which are also published for the first time. Stills from Eisenstein's films (scanned from film stock) and a biographical introduction by British film historian Ian Christie complement this gripping and revealing portrait of the artist.
