"The Talisman, or Richard the Lionheart in Palestine" is one of the best historical novels by Walter Scott. It was first published in 1825 and has since been reprinted and translated into many languages. The events in the novel unfold against the backdrop of the Third Crusade, when King Richard the Lionheart and Sultan Saladin clashed in the fight for Jerusalem. By chance, the Scottish knight Kenneth finds himself in the very heart of internecine intrigues and insidious conspiracies that arise at the junction of two cultures. He will have to go through a winding path full of dangerous adventures, demonstrate loyalty to his lady love and obtain a talisman, the properties of which are the stuff of legends. The elegant, romantic illustrations included in this edition were created by the French painters and graphic artists A. de Richemont and A. de Paris.
