The Tower of Babel is the third novel in the Frederica Quartet, considered perhaps the magnum opus of Dame Antonia Susan Byatt OBE. The quartet was written over a quarter of a century and its plot also spans a quarter of a century, with the first two (The Lady in the Garden, The Living Thing) published before the Booker Prize-winning international bestseller Possession, and the third and fourth after. So, Frederica Potter, a former Yorkshire schoolgirl and Cambridge graduate, and now the wife of a Herefordshire squire, runs away with her young son from her tyrannical husband at his Bran House estate and finds herself in 1960s London, which is about to transform into the psychedelic Swinging London. There she is surrounded by rebellious artists, writers and poets. The story of a single mother who makes her living teaching at an art school and writing literary criticism is interspersed with chapters from a “novel within a novel” called Balabon Tower and the transcripts of two trials—one for the book’s alleged insult to public morals, the other for Frederick’s divorce suit. “Byatt resurrects a legendary decade in a rich, impeccably authentic fullness. Historians will one day be grateful to Lady Antonia for her generosity, and readers can be grateful now” (Boston Review).
