"The Boy" is one of the early novellas by the celebrated Japanese writer Natsume Soseki (1867–1916), which brought him popularity and established his name in Japanese literary circles. Written in 1906, this novella serves as a unique introduction to Natsume Soseki's celebrated trilogy—the novels "Sanshirō," "Then," and "The Gate," which explore the problem of human existence at the turning point of an era, the search for existential balance between traditional culture and the new one engendered by the country's modernization. And this conflict of cultures is most acutely felt in an ordinary school—where knowledge is imparted and assimilated, where teacher and students relearn how to communicate with each other, where the nobility and ardor of youth clash with inertia, cowardice, and meanness.
