The History of the Lombards is a grand narrative of the fate of one of the most enigmatic Germanic peoples who ruled Italy in the sixth to eighth centuries. Paul the Deacon (c. 720–799), a Lombard by birth, a cleric and scholar who witnessed the fall of his native kingdom, compiled chronicles, the writings of Roman historians, and oral traditions at the end of the eighth century to create a living, multi-voiced chronicle of his people. His account spans nearly two centuries—from the migration of the ancient Germanic tribe from Scandinavia to Italy until the death of King Liutprand in 744. While describing historical events in detail, the author does not shy away from another element—folk tales: political analysis coexists with legend, ethnographic observations with tales of miracles, and descriptions of wars with Byzantium and the Franks with romantic novellas and sketches of Italian artistic monuments. Enjoying great popularity in the Middle Ages, "The History of the Lombards" retains undoubted historical and literary interest today as an example of early medieval historiography and one of the first sources on the history of the ancient Germanic people.
