James Crews wrote the story "Tim Thaler, or Sold Laughter" back in 1962. But reading it now, it is almost impossible to believe it - not only the plot, but also the language in which the book is written seems so modern. This is the classic that does not become outdated over the years. More than one generation of readers grew up on this story, and films have been made based on it more than once, including the well-known Soviet "Sold Laughter" (1981).
The action takes place in Germany in the 1930s. Fourteen-year-old Tim Thaler is fed up with the trials that fate sends him: first his beloved mother dies, then his father, and Tim is left alone with his stepmother and half-brother, who do nothing but ruin his life. But Tim is not so easy to break: he knows how to laugh loudly and infectiously, laughter is his main weapon against troubles, which not only he finds priceless...
One day, a mysterious stranger - a certain Baron Tretsch - offers him a deal: Tim gives the baron his laughter, and in return receives the gift of winning any bet. He happily agrees. Having acquired a new talent, Tim constantly wins at the races and gets rich before his eyes. It would seem that he should be happy, but he desperately lacks one thing - his sold laughter. How to get it back?
Friends could help here, but if Tim tells anyone about his misfortune, he will not only not get his laughter back, but will also lose the gift of winning bets...
