It's the end of the 22nd century. The Earth Confederation begins to explore nearby star systems. Gifted individuals—people with strong telepathic abilities—become a powerful force. They form an organization called the Church of the Customs Union, and CTU priests accompany each of Earth's reconnaissance missions when contact with intelligent inhabitants of the planet is expected. There's just one catch: if a civilization is deemed unfriendly, CTU priests not only have the right but are obligated to activate the Gift.

Two brothers—CTU priest Leonid Vargas and security officer Andrei Vargas—have different views on everything, especially the use of the Gift. But when Leonid's mission to the planet Carnelian fails and only fragmentary and unreliable information reaches Earth, it's Andrei, accompanied by xenolinguist Linda Swansen, who travels to Carnelian to investigate. He searches for his brother. She searches for her clone. But what will they find on a planet where the sky is streaked with the Aurora all year round, where the ancient Archon guardians live, and where the rebellious Atlas seeks to settle scores with the Demiurge, with Death itself standing at his shoulder?

The new novel by Yulia Zonis, winner of the RosCon, InterpressCon, Filigree, Bronze Snail, and other awards, is written at the intersection of mythological fiction and space opera and expands the author's multiverse, "Over Orion's Shoulder."
