"Wakkanai" is a graphic novel about Japan's northernmost city. The last city before Sakhalin, it remains one of the few places where you can still encounter the Cyrillic alphabet and hear Russian spoken.

Until 2020, Wakkanai and Sakhalin were connected by a ferry, maintaining relations and cultural exchange. Now, none of this exists, but life goes on in the city. Deer roam the streets, bears occasionally appear, and the Russian language, like the Cyrillic signs, is preserved only in the memory of the city, its houses, and its residents.

This graphic novel by Maxim Chumin and Katya Brovkina explores memory as an artistic medium, turning Wakkanai into the protagonist.

The cinematic narrative is built on the interplay of graphics and watercolors: one layer captures reality, the other reveals the imagination. Through fragments of signs and streets, and by inventing stories of the city and its people, the authors explore how place becomes an image, and fantasy becomes a memory.
