Robert Alexandrovich Shtilmark (1909–1985) was a remarkable Russian writer, author of the legendary novel "The Heir from Calcutta." The book was written in 1950–1951 in a Stalinist prison camp. In a letter to his son, Shtilmark wrote that he had "come up with something adventurous, incredibly complex and engaging, completely out of this world." The novel was published in 1958 and instantly became a bestseller.

The book is set in the 18th century. Frederick Ryland, the heir to an earldom, and his fiancée, Emily, are returning from Calcutta to the shores of England. A pirate ship, captained by Bernardito, boards their vessel. The events that follow unfold rapidly, with plot lines twisting and turning, intersecting across various corners of the globe—England, Italy, Spain, the coast of Africa, and North America. The extraordinary twists and turns of the plot and the vibrant characters make the book a captivating read. This edition includes an afterword by Felix Shtilmark, recounting the writer's life and work, as well as the utterly fantastic story behind the creation of "The Heir from Calcutta," and a complete set of illustrations by Arkady Lurye.
