The main characters, invented by American writer Frank Baum, are familiar to many readers from the book "The Wizard of Emerald City", in which the original text of Baum's first story about the land of Oz was given in a free author's translation by A. M. Volkov. In this case, few people know that in his homeland, in the United States, the classic of children's literature, Lyman Frank Baum is the author of a whole series of books about the land of Oz. The story of a girl who was taken by a hurricane to a magical land inhabited by funny little people, flying monkeys and talking animals is only the beginning of a great epic written by Baum. He took up the pen as a child - together with his brother published the family magazine. Soon after his marriage, Frank opened a small store in one of the Dakota towns, which sold all sorts of things. Looking there kids he told marvelous stories, improvising on the fly. One of them, about the adventures of Dorothy, Scarecrow and Tin Man, was published at the very end of the XIX century. After a dozen years Baum tired of writing more and more books about his fictionalized country, but young readers demanded continuation, and Baum resigned himself to his lifelong role as "court historian of Oz". The last book in the series - "Glinda of Oz" - was published after the death of the writer.
The first edition of the story of the Wizard of Oz was published with illustrations by William Denslow. They decorate this edition as well. Baum met Denslow in 1893. By that time the artist was already 37 years old, and he did not consider himself a book illustrator - he made his living drawing posters and posters, labels and ex-libris. However, Baum liked the manner of Denslow - he used clear contour lines and large local spots without smooth color transitions. It was just the right style for a children's book. Baum was right - his story about Dorothy, the Scarecrow and the Tin Man with drawings by Danslow soon became a bestseller, and for the artist himself cooperation with Baum became the pinnacle of his career. Baum undertook to write new books about Oz. They were illustrated by another artist - John Rea Neill. He began his career, drawing comic strips for one of the Philadelphia newspapers. As in the case of Denslow, illustrations for Frank Baum's stories about the magical land of Oz made him famous in the United States. Neill continued to work on them even after Frank's death, when new books about the adventures of heroes in Oz continued to write Ruth Thompson. When she retired from this work, Neill himself invented several more Oz stories and illustrated them himself.
