The first stories of the classic of Soviet science fiction, Ivan Antonovich Efremov, which were published even before the "Andromeda Nebula" that made his name famous, are difficult to even classify as science fiction as such. The dilogy is a historical story about the life of two periods of antiquity, of which the later is known only slightly better than the earlier: in particular, we know almost nothing about the historical pharaoh Djedefre, but this opened up the widest scope for the imagination of the author, who demonstrated an extraordinary talent as a writer.
The common hero of the two stories is not a man, but a precious stone, a gem with carvings, which carried the greatness of the human spirit through dozens of centuries.
In addition to the dilogy, the volume publishes the story "Tamralipta and Tillottama", a kind of sketch for the novel "The Razor's Edge". The story was completed in 1954, but was published only in 2008.
