This unique publication is the fruit of the joint work of a group of authors in love with the city on the Neva. They faced a very difficult task: it was necessary to show that old cemeteries are an important and integral part of the city's cultural heritage.
The book comprehensively examines all the factors that influenced the formation of the city's necropolis: it provides topographic and historical-cultural characteristics of individual cemeteries; provides general information about the life of different faiths; describes the peculiarities of the life and culture of ethnic and social groups of the population of the Northern capital. The previous edition, in 1996, was awarded the first Antsiferov Prize, awarded for the best modern works on the history of St. Petersburg. But in the time that has passed since then, the situation has changed significantly. The bibliography of the St. Petersburg necropolis has been replenished with a number of monographic studies, and there was a need for serious additions and updates to the information, which was professionally performed by the authors' team.
The book is based on new data from field surveys, as well as materials from literary and archival sources, most of which are summarized for the first time.
