The Bretagne-class battleships are the only superdreadnoughts in the history of French shipbuilding. These powerful warships were armed with ten 340 mm main caliber guns and had strong armor protection. In World War I, Bretagne, Provence and Lorraine (the French name for Lorraine) played an important role in blocking the Austro-Hungarian fleet in the Adriatic Sea. In World War II, after the capitulation of France, in order to prevent its ships from falling into the hands of the Third Reich, the British fleet attacked the French in the Algerian port of Mers-el-Kebir during Operation Catapult. The Bretagne destroyed the famous battleship Hood with precise salvos (it exploded, taking the lives of almost a thousand sailors), the Provence was seriously damaged, and the Lorraine went over to the Free French side and took part in Allied operations, including the largest amphibious operation in the Mediterranean in history - the landing of the anti-Hitler coalition troops in southern France (Operation Dragoon) in 1944.
The book by the leading historian of the French Navy tells in detail about the Bretagne-class battleships, which became an important milestone in the development of the French Navy, restoring the history of the creation, design, service and combat use of these super-dreadnoughts.
The publication is illustrated with drawings and rare photographs.
