The book is dedicated to the cruiser of the Russian fleet: "Dmitry Donskoy" - a ship that in the late 19th - early 20th centuries passed through all the oceans and perished in May 1905 in the Sea of Japan.
Cruisers of the sailing fleet were frigates, corvettes, clippers, brigs and other small vessels. With the transition to metal shipbuilding and armoring of ships, frigates could be both "armored frigates" and "semi-armored frigates" for cruising purposes. In 1892, the word "cruiser" first appeared in the classification of Russian ships. Cruisers of the 1st rank were unofficially called armored cruisers, and cruisers of the 2nd rank, protected only by an armored deck, were armored deck cruisers.
The construction and commissioning of the semi-armored frigates Vladimir Monomakh and Dmitry Donskoy into the Russian fleet marked an important stage in Russian shipbuilding - the transition to the creation of a series of cruiser ships. These ships were well built at Russian shipyards, represented an independent domestic design type and received the glorious names of famous Grand Dukes in Russian history. Dmitry Donskoy - Grand Duke of Moscow Dmitry Ivanovich (1350-1389), who was the first to unite the forces of the Russian people against foreign oppression. After the victory in the Battle of Kulikovo, he received the honorary title of Donskoy from his contemporaries.
For a wide range of readers interested in military history.
