His Imperial Majesty's Own Escort occupied an exceptional position among the guards units of the Russian army, performing honorable service in protecting Russian sovereigns and members of the royal family since 1811. The Escort personnel included Cossacks of the Kuban and Terek Cossack troops, as well as Caucasian highlanders, Ossetians, Georgians, Crimean Tatars and representatives of other nationalities of the Russian Empire. The Escort Cossacks served daily in the Winter Palace and Tsarskoye Selo, accompanied the emperor on trips, and also participated in all major campaigns of the 19th century and the battles of the First World War. According to the author, ensign N.V. Galushkin, the Escort Cossacks, without breaking their oath, served the Tsar and the Fatherland until the abdication of the sovereign and the disbandment of the units in March 1917, after which they continued to serve in the ranks of the Guards Division.
