In June 1942, when World War II was in full swing and the Third Reich had subjugated almost all of continental Europe, the British War Office made an unusual decision: to create commando units from citizens of countries occupied by Germany: French, Dutch, Italians, Belgians... This work was conducted in secret, but even among the units there was one particularly secret unit. German-speaking Jews were recruited into it. Each of its members had already experienced flight, internment, and the burden of being a citizen of a hostile state. Many had lost loved ones. But all of them burned with the desire to fight those who had deprived them of their homeland, family, and the opportunity to live freely. This is how Squad X came into being, a team of people, initially far from the military, who received special training and took part in key events in the fight against Nazism in Western Europe.
American historian and publicist Leah Garrett has collected unique material, including interviews with participants in the events. She traced the journey of several members of the X Squad: from fleeing Germany or Austria, through the camps for citizens of war countries, to returning to Europe as superbly trained commandos and taking part in the fighting. This is the first time the story of the amazing X Squad has been told in such detail.
