Many years ago, Earth's last desperate hopes were shattered when orbital corporations, ruling from above, devastated the planet. Today, the autocratic orbitals indulge in decadent luxury and stand far above the "dirt girls," panzerboys, and buttonheads who endure the hardships of life in ruined cities and slums. But there are those willing to stand up to the corporations and reclaim their freedom. Such are the metal-eyed former Delta-Key, now panzerboy, named Cowboy, and Sarah, a cybernetic assassin desperately trying to find a better life for her drug-addicted brother. Together, they embark on a high-octane odyssey across the broken face of the American West.
Steward is a Beta, meaning clone. In his memories, he's an elite soldier for an orbital company, but because his Alpha didn't perform a brain scan, Steward has no recollection of the last fifteen years of his life... and in those fifteen years, everything has changed. An interstellar corporate war destroyed the company to which he was devoted. His first wife divorced him, as did his second, whom he doesn't even know. Most of his comrades died in a futile battle on a planet called Sheol, and those who survived were severely injured. An alien race arrived on that same planet, becoming the center of a complex and deadly intrigue.
And... someone killed him. Or rather, his Alpha.
Steward still possesses the skills and reflexes that made him the perfect soldier fifteen years ago. But will they help him find the missing pieces of the puzzle that will lead him to his Alpha's killer?
