The distant future. National governments have fallen, the borders of states have been erased, and the time has come for enclaves that unite people on the basis of a common culture or ideology. John Percival Hackworth, a talented nanotechnology engineer, steals the device he has developed from his masters and wants to give it to his daughter so that she can learn to think freely, without the limits imposed by "neo-Victorianism". By chance, however, the Primer falls into the hands of young Nell, a girl from the very bottom of this Dickensian paradise. She now holds a device capable of reprogramming the future of humanity. And it changes everything...
