This book is based on a Stanford University lecture course of the same name. The name "concrete mathematics" is derived from the words "CONTINUAL" and "discrete" mathematics. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with techniques for operating with discrete objects, which is absolutely essential for mathematicians working in computer science. The book is aimed primarily at practitioners (although theorists will also find much of value in it), and is replete with many concrete examples and exercises. The concreteness of the presentation of abstract material is another explanation of the book's title. The breadth of coverage of so many different topics in one book might raise suspicions of a certain lightness, if it were not for the names of its authors - famous American mathematicians. Nevertheless, the word "light" is quite applicable to the book, since the style of presentation is far from dry academicism. As the authors themselves admit, they consider mathematics as entertainment, and they did everything to make sure that the readers of the book got not only knowledge but also pleasure from reading it. The book can be recommended to all mathematicians, but it is primarily intended for students of mathematics and computer science.
