Pavel Grigorievich Kushakov was a Russian scientist and explorer, a doctor on G. Ya. Sedov's expedition to the North Pole, and, after Sedov's death, the de facto leader of the expedition. After the Revolution, he emigrated to Switzerland, where he worked as a researcher in bacteriology. Pavel Grigorievich Kushakov can safely be considered an undeservedly forgotten figure in the history of Russian polar expeditions. Moreover, in most works describing the voyage to the North Pole led by G. Ya. Sedov, Kushakov is cast as a villain, almost guilty of the death of the expedition leader, and biographical studies devoted to him are virtually nonexistent. This book consists of two parts. The first, "Two Years in the Ice," is published exactly as it appears in the 1920 edition and is a diary kept by the author during the expedition until December 5, 1912. The second part, "Midday Night, Midnight Sun," which gives the book its title, has never before been published in Russian. The author, in exile in Switzerland, published it in French in 1946, shortly before his death. This collection of short stories recounts various episodes from the life and expedition of G. Ya. Sedov and the author's work on Dikson Island in 1915-1916.
