The Sound and the Fury is one of the most celebrated books of the 20th century, included in the list of 100 best English-language novels according to Time magazine.

The plot centers on the tragic story of the once rich and influential southern Compson family, now plunging into decline. The events of the novel are shown through the prism of perception of four different characters, each of whom reveals family dramas, betrayals and internal conflicts in their own way. Realism, traditional for southern prose, is framed by the author’s endless stylistically innovative discoveries, the most important of which is the use of the “stream of consciousness” technique in English literature for the first time since Shakespeare’s King Lear.

In the novel, William Faulkner explores the themes of loss, the disintegration of families, the destruction of traditions and the search for meaning in chaos.
