Georges Rodenbach (1855–1898) was a distinguished Belgian poet and novelist, belonging, along with Maeterlinck, to the group of mystic Symbolists.

He was called a "psychologist of cities." This is no coincidence: in his novel The Bell Ringer (1897), the city of Bruges becomes a clockwork mechanism, which, with each ringing of its bells, reverberates in the life of Joris Borluit. Joris dedicated his life to music and this city. After the death of Bruges's chief bell ringer, Borluit succeeds him. But is Borluit happy, has he lived? Only love—forbidden, tragic, and sudden—will force him to believe in life, to love his city again. And to renounce everything.
