German children of the 1930s and 1940s went to war with Colorado beetles, and in their classrooms they learned to sort silkworm larvae, destroying inferior specimens. Dog breeders of the Third Reich were engaged in crazy selection, trying to breed the perfect German dog. The image of the red deer was used to create a picture of the primeval "German forest" - and Hermann Goering organized crazy hunting raids on the deer themselves. Jan Mohnhaupt explores little-studied pages of the Third Reich's history, analyzing the role of animals in the daily life and ideology of the Nazi dictatorship. Based on diaries, specialized magazines, school textbooks and propaganda materials, Mohnhaupt created a reportage full of vivid details about animals: from Berlin living rooms to the Eastern Front. The book makes it clear that the National Socialist worldview is also reflected in the attitude towards animals.
