"Cinderella" is one of the most famous stories, its plot embodied in fairy tales around the world. The tale was first discovered in ancient Egyptian papyri. But the version by the French writer and folktale collector Charles Perrault proved the most popular. This is not surprising. After all, Perrault's "Cinderella" is filled with sparkling lightness, irony, and mirth. It lacks the cruelty and vindictiveness of the German version of the Brothers Grimm tale or the emotional pretentiousness of the Italian Giambattista Basile's "Cinderella the Cat." For this edition, Charles Perrault's first version of the tale, from 1675, was retranslated. Artist Anton Lomaev accompanied it with illustrations that transport the reader to 17th-century France—the century of glittering kings and court intrigue, magnificent balls, gilded carriages, and musketeers—the century of golden fairy tales.
