The book is an adaptation of the adventure story of the famous American writer, a classic of "scary" and detective novel Edgar Poe (1809 - 1849) "The Gold Bug". This is a thrilling story of pirate treasure, the key to the location of which was encrypted. The main character of the story, William Legrand, managed to unravel it, using the laws of cryptography - the science of how to encrypt information. In this he was helped by two finds - a large gold-colored beetle, similar to a scarab beetle, and an old piece of parchment with incomprehensible at first glance numbers and symbols. This textbook will help students of general secondary schools to prepare for the final certification in English in the format of the Unified State Exam in the section "Reading". The text of the textbook has been adapted for educational purposes up to the Intermediate level. Each chapter is accompanied by a commentary, translation of difficult words and expressions, as well as exercises in the format of the Unified State Exam for the "Reading" section, represented by all three types of exam tasks. Executing the exercises will give students the opportunity to gain experience and form skills of full and partial understanding of texts, which will allow them to easily cope with similar tasks in the real exam. At the end of the manual there are answers to the exercises and an English-Russian dictionary. The book is intended for high school students of educational organizations, as well as a wide range of people learning English.
