Apuleius—according to St. Augustine, "an African, the most famous of our Africans"—was an ancient Roman writer and poet, a Platonic philosopher who lived in the second century. He is the author of works about whom we know from school that Pushkin "read Apuleius eagerly, but did not read Cicero." Apuleius's novel, Metamorphoses, in 11 books, has been widely known since St. Augustine as The Golden Ass. This work has come down to us in its complete form, virtually intact, save for a few corrupted phrases, a rarity in ancient literature. The book recounts the incredible adventures of a dissolute noble Roman youth, Lucius, who is mistakenly transformed into a donkey and, in this guise, experiences numerous adventures, often amusing, but sometimes quite dangerous. As a donkey, Lucius unvarnishedly sees the lives of many strata of late antique society—from farmers and robbers to the priests of Cybele and wealthy city dwellers. And it is precisely the broad description of the customs of the Roman Empire that still makes this book interesting and entertaining even for the modern reader.
