The novel is based on events that took place in the Urals and Belarus in the 1930s. When the Soviet Union banned the import of machinery in exchange for gold, grain became the new currency, and the selfless, "golden" labor of collective farmers, draining them of every fiber, paid for the industrialization of the country.

How did they manage to evade punishment and disappear from the investigation files? The protagonists, Agafya Yermolova and Semyon Novikov, face a difficult choice: true and all-consuming love or duty. What will they choose, and is it possible to reverse their decision?
