In the mid-19th century, the world on both sides of the Atlantic was gripped by madness. Adventurers and pilgrims of all stripes, willing to live and eat whatever they could, poured unstoppably from Europe to North America. Gold fever scorched hearts and souls. But some became rich and returned home, unaware that the shadows of the past followed them like an Indian on the warpath.
The latest volume of "Masters of Adventure" reveals new facets of Paul Féval's talent, who traded cloak and sword for carbine and tomahawk. The Western novel "Golden Knives" is complemented by a series of short stories, "Evenings at the Marquise." The house of the beautiful Marquise (whose real name the author revealed only 20 years after the first publication) was a gathering place for interesting people—Balzac, Chateaubriand, Talleyrand, Charles Nodier... and always with fascinating stories to tell. One of them, "Monsieur and Madame Denis," is a rare example of Féval's legacy (it hasn't been reprinted for almost two centuries, even in France). The story is wonderful, unpredictable, reminiscent of the stories of the great 20th-century humorists.
