Bruno the Bear and his dog Lolla are the heroes of four picture books created by contemporary Swedish artist Gunilla Ingves. Each book is dedicated to a season—winter, spring, summer, and fall—and describes a day in the lives of the characters, filled with seasonal activities and pastimes. In "Bruno the Bear's Winter," Bruno and his dog feed the birds that have stayed behind for the winter with seeds and learn to recognize animal tracks in the snow—voles, hares, and roe deer—as well as dog and bird tracks. Bruno and Lolla are caught in a snowstorm, freezing, warming up at home by the stove, and baking pancakes for dinner. That evening, when it got dark and the sky cleared, the stars and moon became especially clear. Bruno and Lolla grabbed binoculars and a star chart and went out to admire the constellations and the moon. The book's main story is framed by notes from Bruno the Bear's observation diary, which are located at the beginning and end of the book. They contain numerous sketches and informative tidbits about the natural world around us. The first diary spread is devoted to the footprints of various animals in the snow, and the second to the moon and stars, which are especially beautiful to see in a clear winter sky. From here, you can learn that the moon has seas and mountains, and that the brightest star is Sirius. You can also learn about the constellations Orion, Ursa Minor, and Ursa Major, and how the solar system is structured. Books from the Bruno Bear series can be called a practical encyclopedia of the seasons for children aged 3-6. With soft pastel illustrations, charming main characters and lots of details to explore on every page.
